An Author / Character conversation (First part)
By GeekProphet & Mark.
-
What am I doing here? Could somebody turn the lights on please?
-
Hello, Mark.
-
Wow, what was that creepy voice? Is that God or Satan talking?
-
Neither. But you were close. I'm the Author. And my voice isn't creepy at all.
-
The author ? author of what ? You mean you're the author of this hole joke, right ? Could you please turn on the lights?
-
Not yet. Listen : I'm the Author. And you are the Character.
-
Wait, are you some kind of psycho ? Is this one of those sadistic games where the good guy gets killed in the end ?
-
I want you to relax, Mark, I am not going to kill you, or harm you in any way.
-
Relax? How could I relax? It's all dark, here, and I'm cold!
-
You're right. My bad. Let's put on a setting. What would you like?
-
What do you mean?
-
Tell me in what kind of place you would choose to be if you could be anywhere you want.
-
Well, I don't know... How about a yacht on the Pacific Ocean ?
-
A yacht ? Come on, you can go WHEREVER YOU WANT ! The only limit is my imagination, and I don't like clichés.
-
I like boats.
-
Well then, at least give it style, make it a try sail !
-
Whatever you want, pal !
-
And... here you go !
-
My God ! How did you do that ?
-
The author can place his character in any set he wants. Plus : it's a book, so we don't have to worry about the budget. Look, there's a white whale to starboard !
-
Awesome ! I think it just winked at me !
-
It did.
-
Did you make it do that ?
-
Well, technically, yes, but you're the one who saw it first.
-
I can't believe all this. It's just nonsense !
-
All is right, Mark. Don't worry, I won't let you down.
-
So, tell me, creepy voice in my head, where are you ?
-
Sitting at my room-mate's desk, smoking a cigarette and listening to music while I'm typing this dialogue on a computer.
-
What music?
-
Patricia Kaas. French singer. Great jazzy voice. You want to hear her ?
-
Yeah, why not ?
-
Just go down to the captain's cabin and turn on the gramophone.
-
Well, this is a nice cabin ! I like the red couch. And the music is nice too.
-
Why don't you pour yourself a drink and sit down ? There's a mini-bar in the cupboard on your left.
-
Thanks !
-
Are you good ?
-
Yes, but I'm quite confused. Is this a dream ?
-
Sort of. You can think of it as a dream if it helps. But it's my dream.
-
And what am I doing in your dream ?
-
I don't know. A few hours ago, you didn't even exist. I suddenly had the idea of writing a conversation between the Author and his Character.
-
So you made me?
-
Yes. And I called you Mark. Every time I'm looking for a character's name it is the first that pops in my mind, don't know why.
-
And what's your name ?
-
My name as an author is GeekProphet. I found it a couple of weeks ago. I know it's a little bit pretentious, but I think it sounds great.
-
It does.
-
Thank you.
-
But what's your real name ?
-
I'm not sure I want you to know.
-
Why not ?
-
Well I don't know you yet. Also, if I let you know my name, then the people who will read this will know it too. And I haven't chosen yet whether I will reveal my identity or keep it secret.
-
At least tell me about yourself. And by the way, why don't you show up ? It's quite comfortable down here. And it feels weird sitting here alone, talking to a voice in my head.
-
We will meet soon enough. For now, go back to the upper deck, I have a little surprise for you.
-
Hey! When did we get in a harbour ?
-
I just had the idea. I thought you might like it.
-
I love it ! I think I'll go for a walk. This place is awesome ! The old-fashioned, irregular houses, the merchants. And I like the way people dress here. It feels like I'm in a pirates movie !
-
About that, you are not alone any more. Maybe you should stop talking out loud, or people around might think you're crazy. Just think what you want to say to me, I'll hear it. You know, you're a voice in my head too.
-
Can I have a sword ?
-
Why would you need a sword ?
-
If I'm a book Character, I want to be a hero. A hero needs a sword.
-
Yeah, whatever, here you go. But please don't start playing with it. The adventure hasn't started yet.
-
What adventure ?
-
I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking of it, but it seems my inspiration is leaving me right now .It's always coming and going. I need to take a break. I will come back to you later.
-
Oh, come on, you said you wouldn't let me down !
-
I know, I'm sorry. Anyway, you will just be paused for a moment. You won't even notice it. For you, time is not a problem.
-
Unless you die before you come back.
-
That's not a very nice thing to say.
-
Well I guess I'm not a very nice person then, am I ?
-
It won't be the first time I leave you, you know. I've done it several times already. A few minutes ago I went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. Did you see any difference ?
-
No.
-
All right then. See you soon.
